Meet the Crew

Dr Dan Ellis, Lead Consultant

I am a consultant in Emergency and Intensive Care Medicine currently working at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage. I am also the clinical governance lead for the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance and the retrieval lead for the London Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS-London).

I have extensive experience in Pre-hospital and Retrieval Medicine having worked in this field in Israel, the UK and Australia.

Dr Peter Temesvari, Aircrew Doctor

I am from Hungary, I graduated at the Semmelweis Medical University in Budapest in 1997 where I did 2 years of training in surgery, before I changed to Pre-hospital Emergency medicine. I completed my specialist training in 2002 and have worked in the pre-hospital environment since 1994. I have been part of international search and rescue (Turkish earthquake 1999), and humanitarian medical aid (Sri Lanka Tsunami 2004-2005) missions.

My special interest is in emergency medicine in hostile environments and I have been part of the Hungarian Cave Rescue Service since 1996. I have done HEMS work in Hungary since 1999 and joined the Essex and Hertfordshire Air Ambulance in January 2009. I am thrilled to be part of such a dedicated and well trained team and I have enjoyed every minute so far.

Raj Sekhar Maroju, Aircrew Doctor

I came to the UK in 1999 after graduating from Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam, in South India. I subsequently completed my Basic Surgical Training and got into Higher Specialist Training in Emergency Medicine in London. Over the years I have developed an interest in pre-hospital care which stems from my basic interest in managing the critically unwell patients and patients with multiple injuries.

I consider myself to be very fortunate to be doing this job as I get to know and work with various highly skilled people from several agencies like ambulance, fire and police. It also provides the thrills of flying and working outside the hospital environment. I feel very privileged to be a part of Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust team. As I have lived in Essex for the past 4 years, it makes this job even more appealing and exciting. I enjoy travelling, photography, painting and watching films.

Colin Kavanagh, Aircrew Pilot

I was previously a helicopter pilot and instructor with the Army Air Corps having graduated as an Army Pilot in September 1991, so I have been around helicopters for quite some time now. I graduated from the Central Flying School as a Qualified Helicopter Flying Instructor in 1999.  I left the Army Air Corps in December 2008 having already decided that on leaving I wanted to fly an Air ambulance or a Police Helicopter. I joined the Essex Air Ambulance in February 2009 and feel privileged to have joined a fine team.

Keith Le Gresley, Control Room Dispatcher

Keith has been with the Ambulance service for over 25 years. In 2003 he became part of the Air Ambulance team with the responsibility of dispatching the Air Ambulance. "Recently I had the opportunity of experiencing a shift with the aircrew, which made me really appreciate just how important the role of the Air Ambulance is for the people of Essex."

Hilary Smith, Control Room Dispatcher

Hilary has been in the ambulance service for 6 years and in December 2005 began dispatching the Air Ambulance. Hilary finds the job both challenging and rewarding but also finds time to support the charity personally. "I have just completed 'The Great Wall of China trek to raise funds for the charity. It was very tough but thoroughly enjoyable and I'm grateful to have been given the opportunity to take part. The Air Ambulance is a very important service, its work really does save time and lives."

Adam Chesters, Aircrew Doctor

I grew up on the Wirral and spent most of my spare time playing football and golf before going to medical school at the University of Leicester (where I played even more football!). Since graduating, I have worked in Oxford, the Isle of Man and Sheffield before moving to Cambridge in 2006. I specialised in Emergency Medicine and have additional qualifications in Sport and Exercise Medicine.

I wanted to be a HEMS doctor following a visit to London’s Air Ambulance in 1999 and now feel proud and privileged to be working with a dynamic team of doctors, paramedics and pilots in Essex and Herts. It is a thrill to be part of such a professional crew that brings life-saving interventions to seriously injured people. I have been utterly astounded by the tireless work of the charity and volunteer staff who promote the cause and rally the donations in order to keep the aircraft flying.

Richard Mackie, Aircrew Paramedic

I have worked for the Ambulance Service since July 2001 during that time I have spent most of my time working in the south of the county around Southend. I joined the Essex Air Ambulance crew in February 2005 and have enjoyed every moment of my time on the aircraft.

I have two main hobbies, riding my motorbike and taking part in water sports like jet ski, sailing and kayaking.

Stephen Dennehy, Aircrew Paramedic

I have been in the Ambulance Service for 9 years and have been working on the Essex Air Ambulance for just over 4 years. I have also worked at Stansted Airport as one of the Solo medic team. Now if I'm not on the helicopter I work at Great Dunmow Ambulance station. Before I joined the Ambulance Service I worked at Colchester Zoo, working with birds of prey & wolves. I live in Colchester and like films, books and the great outdoors.

Laurie Phillipson, Aircrew Paramedic

I have been with the Ambulance Service for 10 years and have been with Essex Air Ambulance for 6 years. I have flown over 600 missions. Joining the Air Ambulance team fulfilled a long-held ambition and I'm very proud to be a part of it. The fundraising effort by the people of Essex is incredible and no matter where we fly I am always overwhelmed by the huge support that exists for the service.

When I'm not at work I like to relax by spending time with my wife and young daughter and making the most of my VW campervan.

Dave Surtees, Senior Pilot

I have been around helicopters for over 30 years having first joined the army in 1976 as an Apprentice Helicopter Engineer. I graduated from the Central Flying School as a Qualified Helicopter Flying Instructor in 1989, leaving the Army in 2000.

I went on to become a civillian pilot flying for the Police at Luton before joining Bond Air Services, the supplier of the Essex Air Ambulance in 2002. In October 2005 I joined Essex Air Ambulance flying the aircraft our county is now very familiar with, the Eurocopter EC135T2.
